Thank you for taking the time to view my blog. I hope you find it useful. I always like to know some background on the people whose writing I enjoy. So here are a few things about me.
I was born in Riverdale, Maryland in 1946. When I was six, our family moved to Asheville, North Carolina, which is where I call home. My parents were very faithful Southern Baptists, so I attended church about every week and continue to do so today. However, I moved from the Southern Baptist camp a number of years ago and have been a part of a number of churches since then.
I was married to Gloria for over 48 years before her death in 2018. Together we
had two children, one of which shares my enthusiasm for writing and the other followed my footsteps as an accountant. I am currently married to Heather and we live in Lakeland, Florida. I can attribute much of who I have become to both of my wives’ influence on me. They have been my strong supporters over the years, providing valuable feedback for some of my ideas and hair-brained schemes.
I graduated from Mars Hill University with a BS in Accounting, the University of Georgia with an MBA (Go Dawgs!), and the University of Memphis with a DBA in Accounting. I received numerous professional certifications including CPA, CMA, CFM, CIA, and CGFM. I passed all of the certification exams on my first try and received honorable mention for my CIA scores.
Professionally, I was a College Professor and CPA before I retired from teaching in 2014 and from my tax practice in 2021. Over the years, I have been active in my church and various civic organizations, usually faith-based. Of course, as a CPA, I frequently found myself as Treasurer of the organization. I observed that being Treasurer of an organization was likely a lifetime job as good volunteer treasurers are hard to come by. On the other hand being Treasurer may prevent you from becoming President of the organization, as they don’t want to lose the Treasurer. I received an award from Florida Southern as the outstanding faculty member in public service. I also was chosen as the recipient of the Florida Institute of CPAs award for outstanding public service.
Serving as Treasurer of His Nets, an organization donating insecticide-treated mosquito nets in areas subject to malaria led me to spending a week in Ghana, distributing 4,000 nets that week. Our saying for the week was “I saved 5,000 lives this morning. What did you do,” referring to the ability of the nets to protect from malaria.
Writing has always been a passion for me, even though it was a talent that was dormant for a number of years. However, I began writing academic articles as a part of my duties at Florida Southern College and had a number of articles published. I have written consumer tax articles for The Polk County Business Journal, among other publications. I had a tax blog that I called “The TaxDoc Spot.” Upon my retirement, my writing focus turned to faith-based articles, published on Facebook and a site owned by David Moscrip entitled ”Wonderfully Plagued.”
I enjoy a variety of sports as a spectator. Baseball, arena soccer, college football and hockey are among my favorites. I was a runner for a number of years and completed two marathons in under four hours and ran over 10,000 miles. I am a prolific reader, listen to a variety of music, and like to travel. My travels have taken me to over 30 countries.
